Crete holidays have been popular with the British for many years and offer variety and Greek charm. Crete lies at the point where the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa meet.

It is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean with an area of over 8,000 square kilometres. The island of Crete sits on an east-west axis and a length of nearly 260km, a maximum width of 60kmand a minimum width of only 12km.

A holiday in Palekastro could include exploration of some of the villages in the olive groves and hills of the interior. Palekastro holidays could use Palekastro as a base for exploring the east of Crete, the wildest and most unknown area of Crete, with fantastic beaches like Xerokambos beach, Kato Zakros beach and Kouremenos beach with strikingly clear blue water. Vai beach is a renowned popular beach in Greece and home to Europe’s only natural palm tree forest. While it attracts crowds it deserves its reputation as a beauty spot. Other superb beaches and more ancient ruins are found at Itanos beach five miles to the north of Palekastro.

Palekastro holiday nightlife is based on many tavernas, some by the beach and others in town, including plenty of genuine non-tourist places serving good food to the townspeople. There is plenty of normal Crete day-to-day street life to watch in the main square of Palekastro.

The airport is named after Herkalion native Nikos Kazantzakis, a Greek writer and philosopher.

It is the second busiest airport of Greece, mostly due to the fact that Crete is a major destination for tourists during summer. There are regular domestic flights to and from Athens, Thessaloniki and Rhodes with Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airlines.

During the summer period, traffic is intense and the flight destinations are from all over Europe (mostly Germany, UK, Italy and Russia). The airfield is shared with the 126 Combat Group of the Hellenic Air Force. The take off in western direction leads directly over the town of Heraklion, which makes it a very noisy city.

In the year 2000, the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, which takes in part of the surrounding villages, claimed around 19,000 inhabitants. The town is the capital of the nomos (province) of Lasithi, and sits partially upon the ruins of the ancient city of Lato pros Kamara.

Makri Gialos

The beach is lined with a good variety of tavernas to suit all tastes, the fishing port being the most picturesque part of the village.

From the port, there is a boat which leaves each morning for the beautiful island of Koufonisi, returning late afternoon. Makri Gialos has a very good suply of shops, tavernas and watersport facilities and attracts visitors of all ages. From Makri Gialos you can visit also Monastery of Kapsa.
